5th District Cracks Down on ATVs

It's summer in the District, and that means the occasional dirt bike tearing through the neighborhood.  I have no idea what provokes someone to run through a red light on an off road vehicle without a helmet, but it seems to happen with some frequency in Northeast.

The Metropolitan Police Department, Fifth District is cracking down.  They recently reported that members of the Fifth District midnight shift arrested an adult male for driving an ATV in the 1500 block of W Street, NE. He was processed on June 5, 2012, and the ATV was removed from the street.  And on June 6th, the Fifth District reported another arrest at the 2900 block of Vista Street, NE for an individual on a prohibited dirt bike. The dirt bike was recovered and reported stolen. The arrestee was additionally charged with Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle (UUV).

Capt. Brown of the Fifth District Recently posted the following guidance:
While most of these bikes are considered as "off road" bikes, there are some that can be operated on the streets. However, these bikes must be registered and tagged in the same manner as any other vehicle operating in the District of Columbia.

The operator must comply with all traffic regulations to include parking. At no time is any motorcycle or dirt bike allowed to park on the sidewalk.

ALL ATVs are considered as 'off road" vehicles and not permitted on the street.
If you're interested in DC laws regarding Non-Traditional Motor Vehicles, check out this chart.  And keep reporting these vehicles to the police!  Great job, MPD-5D!
